How to make IoT devices cyber safe

In the last blog article you learned what IoT is. The use of IoT devices makes our lives much easier, but it also brings along dangers.
We have created a list of potential dangers for you to be aware of.

Change default credentials

Always change the default usernames and passwords of your IoT devices. Default credentials are often known to hackers and can be easily exploited.

Keep devices updated

Regularly update the firmware and software of your IoT devices. Manufacturers often release updates to fix security vulnerabilities, so it’s crucial to stay up to date.

Use strong, unique passwords

Create strong and unique passwords for each IoT device. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters, and avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or names.

Secure your home network

Ensure that your home Wi-Fi network is secure by using strong encryption (WPA2 or WPA3) and a unique password. Also, consider setting up a separate network for your IoT devices to isolate them from your main network.

Disable unnecessary features

Disable any unnecessary features or services on your IoT devices. This reduces the attack surface and minimizes potential vulnerabilities.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

Whenever possible, enable two-factor authentication for your IoT devices. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your smartphone.

Regularly review device permissions

Review the permissions and access levels granted to each IoT device. Disable any unnecessary permissions that could potentially compromise your privacy or security.

Use a firewall

Install a firewall to monitor and control incoming and outgoing traffic. This helps in detecting and blocking any suspicious activity.

Be cautious with third-party apps

Only download and install apps from trusted sources. Read reviews and check permissions before granting access to your IoT devices.

Keep an eye on manufacturer updates

Stay informed about security updates and patches released by the manufacturers of your IoT devices. Regularly check their websites or subscribe to their newsletters for the latest information.
