These two terms are often confused. Archiving, however, does not only include the long-term storage of data, but also deals with issues such as who accessed what and when. For example, a good archiving system also records mails that are deleted by the sender after sending and therefore may not be backed up by the regular backup cycle. Long-term backup can be an integral part of a comprehensive archiving solution.
