Backup project - Have you thought of everything?
We have summarised the most important considerations for you:
Data size and scalability
Evaluate the amount of data to be backed up and consider its potential growth over time. Make sure that the backup solution can handle your current data volume and has the necessary scalability to allow for future expansion.
Thanks to MOUNT10, the required data volume can be easily adapted to your current requirements. This means you only pay for the backup you actually need – efficiently and cost-effectively.
Type of data
Different data types may require different backup methods. Determine whether you need to back up files, databases, virtual machines or a combination of these. Some backup solutions specialise in specific data types, so choose one that meets your requirements.
Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO)
RTO refers to the acceptable downtime you can tolerate before data needs to be restored, while RPO refers to the maximum amount of data loss you can tolerate. Consider these factors to determine how quickly you need to recover data and how much data loss is acceptable in the event of a failure.
Data backup frequency
Consider how frequently your data changes and how often you need to perform backups. Some solutions offer continuous or near-continuous backup options, while others may have scheduled backup intervals. Choose a backup solution that matches your desired backup frequency.
The MOUNT10 Service Operation Centre monitors your backups manually on a daily basis. This gives you the guarantee that your backups are performed regularly and successfully.
What history do my data require?
Depending on which data you are backing up, we recommend different retention periods. It is important that a history is available – saving files on a cloud platform (e.g. OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) does not count as a backup.
- 7 days – Virtual machines that need to be restored quickly
- 30 days – Virtual machines that are time-consuming to restore
- 90 days – Data
- 1 year – Business-critical data
- 10 years – Data that must be stored for at least 10 years by law (e.g. accounting data)
- > 10 years – Data that must be retained for longer than 10 years by law (e.g. property data)
MOUNT10’s backup solutions enable flexible data storage that is tailored to your individual needs. You decide whether you want to store your data for three months, ten years or even longer. You have round-the-clock online access to your data.
Security and encryption
Data security is critical, especially if you are backing up sensitive or confidential information. Make sure the backup solution offers robust encryption options to protect your data both in transit and at rest. Pay attention to the encryption algorithms used and the strength of the encryption keys.
MOUNT10 guarantees that your data remains securely in Switzerland. It is encrypted and stored redundantly in the most secure data fortress in Europe to ensure double security. Our data centres are located in the Swiss Alps in Swiss Fort Knox I & II, the most secure locations in Europe. Here, your data is optimally protected against dangers such as crypto-viruses, natural disasters, theft, vandalism, fire and other risks.
Data immutability
The immutability of data plays a central role in protecting against the loss of data. It ensures that once backed up information is protected from unauthorised changes, ensuring the integrity of the data and the possibility of successful recovery in the event of data loss. This critical factor forms the basis for a robust and reliable data recovery strategy.
With the majority of MOUNT10’s backup solutions you can ensure the immutability of your data. This prevents an attacker, yourself or your employees from changing or even deleting the backups. Avoid high recovery costs and do not make yourself vulnerable to attack.
Storage location and redundancy
Determine where your backups should be stored. Cloud-based solutions offer offsite storage, while local backups can be stored on external hard drives or NAS (network-attached storage) devices. Consider redundancy options to ensure data availability in the event of storage failures.
Usability and administration
Evaluate the user-friendliness of the backup solution. Pay attention to the simplicity of setup, configuration and ongoing management. A backup solution with a user-friendly interface and intuitive controls can simplify the backup process and reduce the likelihood of errors.
Compatibility and integration
Ensure that the backup solution is compatible with your operating system, applications and infrastructure. Check whether it can be integrated into your existing systems, such as databases or virtualisation platforms, to ensure a seamless backup process.
Costs and budget
Consider the cost of the backup solution, including any upfront costs, ongoing subscription fees or additional storage costs. Compare different options and choose one that fits your budget and fulfils your backup requirements at the same time.
The costs for our data backup solutions are always calculated on a customised basis. In this way, you pay exactly for the service you require, depending on your reserved data volume and the desired retention period of your data. Our pricing is transparent, with no hidden costs.
